Hardtail Mountain Bikes

(59 products)

Hardtail mountain bikes are the classic, versatile choice for new and experienced riders.

With a front suspension fork and a rigid rear end, hardtail MTBs are lighter and more efficient than dual-suspension bikes. Giving you direct power transfer, efficiency and precise handling on smoother trails and cross-country rides.

They are mostly popular with new riders. Riders who are riding with the family and general fitness. And new riders who need a capable bike to ride off-road trails.

Micro hardtail mountain bike buying guide

First, suspension.

All hardtail mountain bikes will have suspension. Some models will have a lever on the right-side to lock the suspension. Lock it for rides where the paths are smooth and unlock for rougher trails.

Next, there's gears.

This is really important. More gears means better quality gears.

Generally a 7-speed gear system is entry-level. 8-speed and 9-speed is mid-range. 10-speed is affordable performance. 11-speed and beyond is performance.

Lastly, the brakes.

There are 3 different types of brakes; V-brakes, mechanical disc brakes and hydraulic disc brakes.

For flatter bike paths, V-brakes are fine. Mechanical disc brakes deliver better stopping power.

And hydraulic disc brakes deliver the best stopping power and control. Plus, need the least maintenance.

Recreational hardtail mountain bikes

Recreational mountain bikes tend to be a little more zippy and agile compared to the Trail bike below.

But they are also less confident on technical mountain bike trails.

But if you'll be riding easier trails and suburban bike paths, these are more than capable.

Some options to get you started are:

Trail hardtail mountain bikes

A trail hardtail mountain bike is a versatile off-road bike designed for riders who want the confidence of riding off-road trails.

In comparison, cross-country (XC) hardtails focus on speed and climbing efficiency.

Trail hardtails are built to handle rougher, more technical terrain. From flowing singletrack to rocky climbs and descents.

They are perfect for riders who want a simple, tough bike that climbs well and descends confidently. And keeps the thrill of mountain biking alive without breaking the bank.

Trail bikes are quite different in their handling and feel. Here's why:

Trail hardtails have more suspension. More suspension equals more stability. Especially on uneven and unstable surfaces.

  • Modern geometry for more control on steep descents.
  • Wider, grippier tyres for extra traction.
  • Dropper seatposts so you can lower the saddle when the trail gets steep.
  • Tough components that can handle real trail abuse.

Some options for you to start looking at are:

Performance XC hardtail mountain bikes

These hardtail mountain bikes are designed to be the lightest and most efficient. They can be made from either aluminium or carbon frames.

These bikes have sharper steering and agile, responsive handling.

Paired to the racier frames are performance hardware. These builds will generally have higher-end gears, brakes, suspension and wheels.
