Electric Bikes

Below you'll see our massive collection of electric bikes, including electric mountain bikes from Rocky Mountain, Giant, Liv and Orbea, electric folding bikes from Rilu and XDS, and electric hybrids (such as the Giant Roam E+ and Liv Rove E+) that are a cross-over mountain and road. These are perfect for fitness, commuting and family bike rides.

What sort of Electric bike are you going to buy?

To minimise mind-explosions, we’re gonna keep it simple.

You’ll find yourself in one of these 3 buckets:

  • Hybrid
  • Mountain Bike
  • Road Bike
  • Folding Bike

Simple E-bike Tech.

We've got 2 major components on on electric bike: battery and the motor.

First, is the battery capacity.

This is measured in Wh (Watt-hour).

All else being equal (rider weight, bike weight, tyre pressure...), more Wh = more range.

Because Watt-hour is the supplied energy over time.

Then, we got torque (Nm: Newton-metre).

Think of torque as the amount of work the motor needs to do.

That's why recreational hybrid e-bikes will have a lower torque (60Nm) compared to high-performance electric mountain bikes (up to 108Nm).

Motor Position: Mid-Drive

Most people love the warm and fuzzy feeling that comes from having power. You’d be crazy not to, right?

And that’s exactly why we sell mainly mid-drive electric bikes more than hub-drives.

Mid-drives have more torque, so they can pull you and any luggage you carry (objects, dogs, humans…) up steep hills with ease.

It’s like reverse ageing 15 years. It’s awesome.

Remember those warm and fuzzies? They kick in about now too.

Mid-drives also have the heaviest weight in the centre of the frame and at the lowest part of the frame.

This means very natural bike handling.

Motor Position: Rear Hub

So…um, who’s crazy enough to buy hub drives then?

Hub-drives are purchased/used in 4 areas:

  • You don’t need a huge amount of assistance.
  • Folding bikes or bikes with smaller wheels.
  • You have a strict budget.
  • You have a considerable budget.

Yeah, we know points 3 and 4 are kinda opposing. Here’s the explainer:

Hub-drives either come on e-bikes built to a price or come on premium e-bikes such as Spanish brand Orbea’s Vibe and Gain models (they’re legit good).

Premium hub-drive e-bikes get a lot of research and development fed into them. Think:

  • Lighter materials
  • Advanced battery tech
  • Better geometry for safer handling
  • Custom firmware to deliver power naturally

Electric Hybrids.

Think cross-between road and mountain.

These little machines can do almost everything.

The Warburton trail, suburbia, commutes into work, general fitness, leaving your friends eating your bike dust…

Now, hybrid electric bikes come with or without front suspension.

It just depends on what terrain you wanna ride and (more importantly) how you wanna be positioned.

If you want comfort then you’ll probably want an electric hybrid with suspension.

Why for?

The suspension raises the front end up (a lot).

Hence more relaxed posture. Hence, less strain on upper back/neck/shoulders. Hence, you ride longer with less fatigue.

Plus, it’ll smooth out any dirt or gravel paths.

But:

If you don’t mind being in a sporty riding position and only 10-20% of your paths are going to be unsealed, without suspension will be absolutely fine.

E-MTB: Electric Mountain.

Electric mountain bikes can be separated into 2 categories:

  • Lightweight
  • Full Power

Lightweight E-MTB's are a new breed.

And in many ways these bikes are at the pointy-end of technology.

They are an excellent fit for riders who want a natural-handling mountain bike.

Full-powered E-MTBs are great for new riders with low mountain-bike conditioning/fitness or if you're wanting the most range.

Electric Road.

You should consider an electric road bike if:

  • You're not cycling fit and you want to get back into the sport.
  • You'll be using this as a recovery tool after hard rides.
  • You commute and your prefer a road bike.
  • You ride in hilly or mountainous areas.

There's one brand that does E-Road better than the rest.

Orbea designed the Gain to deliver the best electric road riding experience.
