Shogun EBX5
Shogun designed the EBX5 to be a versatile E-MTB (electric mountain bike).
But unlike a lot of recreational E-MTB's, Shogun decided to put the EBX5 on steroids.
To the point where it's the 2nd most torquiest recreational E-MTB in our range (1st place goes to the Rocky Mountain Fusion Powerplay 10).
In the preview, we'll go through a little bit more about the EBX5 and how it compares to its closest rival, the Giant Talon E+ 3.
- Torque: 100Nm
- Battery Size: 374Wh
- Motor: Ananda M100
What is the EBX5?
Shogun designed the EBX5 to be used on a mixture of pavement, unsealed surfaces and light off-road trails such as Lysterfield Park.
The key is the EBX5's wide low-profile tyres that minimise rolling resistance on pavement. But still retain lots of grip on loose dirt and gravel surfaces.
Who should consider the EBX5?
Riders, you should keep the EBX5 on your shortlist if:
- You're riding a combination of pavement and easy off-road.
- You prefer a bike that feels calm and stable, not nervous or twitchy.
- You're a heavier rider because the 100Nm of torque will comfortably get you up inclines.
- Your neck of the woods has seriously steep inclines.
How does it compare?
The closest comparison in our range is the Talon E+ 3. Like the EBX5, the intended usage is the same.
First, the most obvious difference is the torque output.
The Talon E+ 3 outputs 50Nm compared to the EBX5's 100Nm. The battery size for the Talon is 400Wh vs. 374Wh. So riders should expect to get slightly less range.
Next is the user interface.
Giant has an app called Ride Control that acts like a mini bike computer and GPS. It shows you speed, distance, battery range, cadence - almost every variable you need.
Plus you can check the health of your motor, controller and battery.
The EBX5 has no app. So there's less features.
But for those who just want basic information, the LCD screen on the EBX5 does show this data clearly (there's a plastic sticker over the screen which is why it looks a bit smudgy).
The motor
Ananda has been producing electric motors since 2011. They have produced millions of units over that time. And they have a massive presence around the world.
Ananda's M100 drive-unit is designed for off-road and eCargo use. So it's designed to be heavy duty.
The mid-drive positioning places the approx. 3.5kg motor at the lowest and most central part of the frame possible.
This makes the handling feel natural and there's no crazy weight shifts when you're cornering, climbing or descending.
The components
Shogun has built the EBX5 with Shimano's upper-end recreational gears.
The 9-speed gear system is designed such that a single front gear is paired to multiple rear gears. This minimises moving parts and makes maintenance so much simpler.
A single right-hand side gear shifter controls gear changes. Gear 9 is the hardest and gear 1 is the easiest.
Hydraulic disc brakes are a must on E-MTBs.
They deliver more power, better modulation and control - especially in wet conditions.
Unlike mechanical brakes, these don't need as much maintenance. Making them a super robust and reliable option for frequent riding.
