What is the Rocky Mountain Powerplay?
Powerplay is Rocky Mountain's range of electric mountain bikes. Where most brands fit a motor from Bosch, Shimano or another supplier, Rocky Mountain designs its own: the Dyname.
The full-suspension Powerplay bikes we stock use the Dyname 4.0, with 108Nm of torque and 700W of peak power, paired with a removable 720Wh battery. As on every e-bike sold in Australia, the motor assists up to 25km/h.
Powerplay comes in three types:
The Instinct Powerplay for trail riding, the Altitude Powerplay for enduro and steep descents, and the Fusion and Growler Powerplay hardtails for bike paths, fire roads and easier trails.
Our current Powerplay bikes are 2022 to 2024 models, many at run-out prices ahead of the 2027 range, which is due in the first quarter of 2027.
The Rocky Mountain Powerplay range
Every full-suspension Powerplay we stock uses the Dyname 4.0 motor and a 720Wh battery. Here's the range by family:
Instinct Powerplay: trail e-MTB, 140mm rear and 150mm fork. Comes with a carbon frame (C70) or an alloy frame (A70 and A30).
Altitude Powerplay: enduro e-MTB, 160mm rear and 170mm fork. Comes with a carbon frame (C90) or an alloy frame (A50, A30, and the A30 Coil with a coil rear shock).
Fusion and Growler Powerplay: hardtail e-MTBs, front suspension only. The Fusion Powerplay 10 has an alloy frame, a 120mm air fork, the Dyname 4.0 motor and a 480Wh battery. The Growler Powerplay A30 has an alloy frame, a 130mm air fork, the earlier Dyname 3.0 motor and a 643Wh battery.
Which Rocky Mountain e-bike should you buy?
Instinct Powerplay: the trail e-MTB.
With 140mm of rear travel and a 150mm fork, the Instinct Powerplay is built for all-round trail riding. The motor flattens the climbs, so you fit more laps into a ride, and the suspension is capable on rough, technical descents without being more bike than most trails need. It's the right choice for most riders.
Altitude Powerplay: built for descending.
The Altitude Powerplay is the enduro e-MTB, with 160mm of rear travel and a 170mm fork. Choose it if you ride steep, rough trails and want the motor to do the work of getting back to the top. The A30 Coil uses a coil rear shock, which stays consistent on long, rough descents.
Carbon or alloy?
The carbon frames are lighter, while the alloy frames bring the same travel, motor and battery for less. On run-out pricing, the alloy builds are the lowest-cost way onto a full-suspension Powerplay.
Fusion and Growler Powerplay: the hardtails.
These have front suspension only, which keeps them simpler and lower priced. The Fusion Powerplay 10 has a 120mm air fork and a 480Wh battery, and suits bike paths, rail trails and easier singletrack. The Growler Powerplay A30 has a 130mm air fork and the earlier Dyname 3.0 motor with a 643Wh battery.
Battery, range and charging
Every full-suspension Powerplay we stock carries a 720Wh battery that comes out of the frame, so you can charge it at home or at work.
How far it takes you depends on the assist level, the terrain and your weight, so treat any range figure as a guide rather than a promise.
The A50, A70 and carbon models come with Rocky Mountain's 4A FAST charger, quoted at about three hours to 80% and four hours to full on a 720Wh battery.
The A30 models come with a standard 2A charger, which takes longer.
For longer days, Rocky Mountain's Overtimepack 2 range extender fits every Instinct Powerplay and Altitude Powerplay we stock, in every frame size and with any rear shock, including the coil shock on the A30 Coil. For the Fusion and Growler hardtails, ask us.
