A stable and versatile commuter bike.
These commuter bikes will almost always have suspension.
An exception is the Giant Toughroad; it's stable without suspension.
Stable means:
- The steering response has been slowed down to make the overall feel of the bike calmer and more controlled. Something new riders will appreciate.
- The commuter bike isn't twitchy or nervous, especially as the speed increases.
Adding suspension smooths out impacts but it also makes the bike a little more versatile.
So if your commute route is a little rough or you want the flexibility to be able to ride on unsealed (dirt and gravel) paths, then a suspension-equipped commuter might be the go.
So, suspension adds stability and opens up riding on a variety of surface types.
But it also lifts the front of the bike by up to 65mm.
This means pressure gets eased off your hands, arms and neck, so the position is a little more comfortable - especially for new or occasional riders.
Examples of commuter bikes with suspension include Giant Roam (mens) and Liv Rove (womens).

A faster commuter bike.
As you've guessed, these commuter bikes won't have suspension.
The advantage here is that there's less weight (up to 3kg) that you're riding around with.
You should consider a rigid, fast commuter bike if:
- You're already riding a suspension bike and feel like suspension isn't necessary.
- Your commute is on pavement or smooth, compacted dirt paths.
- You prefer a bike that's lighter and more responsive.
No front suspension results in a lighter steering front end.
Making these commuter bikes more responsive and efficient.
Examples include:
- Giant Cross City (mens) and Liv Alight (womens)
- Giant Fastroad (mens) and Liv Thrive (womens)
