Giant Fastroad

What is the Giant Fastroad?

Giant's Fastroad has been designed as a fast and efficient commuter and fitness bike.

Recent changes to the Fastroad for MY23 and beyond has made the platform more versatile and comfortable.

As part of the Fastroad family, there are 2 carbon models and 2 aluminium alloy models.

The range.

Giant has made 2 Fastroad models; the Fastroad AR and the Fastroad AR Advanced.

Anytime you see the word Advanced in the Fastroad model name, it indicates that model uses a carbon frame.

Otherwise, that model uses an aluminium frame.

The range starts at the Fastroad AR 2 and tops out at the Fastroad AR Advanced 1.

We'll go through each model next.

Giant Fastroad AR 2.

The AR 2 uses Giant's ALUXX grade of aluminium. The frame is a little heavier than the Fastroad AR 1 which uses the ALUXX-SL grade.

The frame is paired to a full-carbon fork; enhancing handling and improving comfort.

Next, the gears.

Shimano's new CUES is the latest range of heavy-duty recreational components.

The AR 2 uses the 9 speed version of CUES.

Riders have a single front gear paired to 9 back gears with a super wide range (from 11-tooth to 41-tooth).

No front gears equals less maintenance; less moving parts such as a front derailleur, shifter and gear cable.

Tektro hydraulic disc brakes reduce maintenance and improve stopping power.

Giant Fastroad AR 1.

The Fastroad AR 1 is designed for riders who want an overall lighter bike and smoother gears.

The AR 1 gets the following upgrades:

  • ALUXX-SL grade aluminium.
  • Shimano 11-speed gears deliver smoother gear shifts.

Giant Fastroad AR Advanced 2.

The full carbon frame is 350 grams lighter than the aluminium version.

In the bike world, that is a huge difference.

Choosing carbon is not just about the weight - it's the handling.

Because carbon frames are lighter, they respond faster to rider input. Think acceleration from traffic lights or climbing a hill.

They also corner better. The stiffer frame holds its line easier through corners.

Riders already riding an aluminium frame will appreciate the upgrade. If it's your first good bike, then maybe the appreciation level won't be as high - unless you're chasing the lightest.

Fastroad AR Advanced 2 riders also get Shimano's latest CUES 10-speed gears.

It's also worth noting that the AR Advanced 2 has the easiest gear (48-tooth sprocket). So if you're building bike fitness or you have serious punchy climbs, life will be a little easier.

Giant Fastroad AR Advanced 1.

This top of the range Fastroad has the following upgrades:

  • Smoother SRAM Apex 12-speed gears
  • Lighter Giant P-X2 wheels.
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes.

The Fastroad AR Advanced 1 will suit riders who regularly commute or semi-serious enthusiasts.
